Maskull Lasserre

Maskull Lasserre was artist-in-residence at the Broad Institute in 2014-2015. Lasserre came to Broad via Canada, where his work is represented in the collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Government of Canada, and the Royal Bank.

Lasserre says his work is shaped by the objects he encounters, and that his work can therefore be be viewed as “art by accident rather than by intent.” He conceives and constructs objects as physical thought-experiments, mechanical meditations, and instruments for the shaping of thought processes. He recognizes the kinship that his approach to art shares with research science, which also uses through models, and develops through manipulations of the material world.

In addition to installations in Canada, Laserre’s work has also been exhibited across the United States and Europe in such venues as the Museum of Art and Design in New York and the GRASSI Museum in Germany. Lasserre also participated in the Canadian Forces War Artist Program in Afghanistan.
